This Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is an easy and delicious family meal featuring layers of shredded chicken, Black Forest ham, Swiss cheese, and a creamy mustard sauce topped with golden Panko breadcrumbs.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups shredded chicken
  • 9 oz sliced deli-style Black Forest ham, cut into strips (~9 slices)
  • 8 oz sliced Swiss cheese (~12 thin slices)
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 6 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 ½ cups Panko breadcrumbs
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • Chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.
  2. Evenly spread shredded chicken into the baking dish.
  3. Layer sliced Black Forest ham over the chicken.
  4. Place Swiss cheese evenly over the ham, overlapping slices to fit.
  5. Melt 6 tbsp butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in Dijon mustard, lemon juice (if using), garlic powder, salt, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper.
  6. Add flour and whisk to form a paste.
  7. Slowly whisk in milk, a quarter cup at a time, until smooth. Simmer 4 minutes until thickened, whisking occasionally.
  8. Pour the sauce over the cheese layer and spread evenly.
  9. Combine Panko breadcrumbs with softened butter and spread evenly on top.
  10. Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, until sauce bubbles and Panko is golden brown.
  11. Let sit 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the Panko topping is golden brown for extra crunch.
  • Letting the casserole sit before serving helps the sauce set properly.
