This Crème Brûlée French Toast is rich, custardy, and topped with a caramelized sugar crust. Perfect for brunch or a decadent breakfast treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread (12–14 slices)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or almond/oat milk)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or vanilla bean paste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or nutmeg)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Cut bread into thick slices and arrange in a greased baking dish.
  2. Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour custard over bread, pressing down gently. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Bake 25–30 minutes until top is golden and custard is set. Broil 2–3 minutes for extra crisp if desired.
  6. Sprinkle sugar on top and caramelize with a kitchen torch or under broiler.
  7. Let cool slightly, then serve with berries, powdered sugar, or maple syrup.

Notes

  • Use whole grain or gluten-free bread for added fiber.
  • Substitute low-fat milk and cream to reduce calories.
