Crispy, savory sausage hash brown appetizers, perfect for parties or a fun snack! Bite-sized treats made with breakfast sausage, hash browns, cheese, and spices, then fried to golden perfection.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (mild or maple preferred, spicy works too)
  • 1 (20 ounce) package frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese blend)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying (about 2-3 cups)
  • Optional: Sour cream or your favorite dipping sauce, for serving
  • Optional: Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked and no longer pink (7-10 minutes). Drain excess grease.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and translucent (3-5 minutes).
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine cooked sausage & onion, thawed hash browns, shredded cheese, flour, beaten eggs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Scoop portions and form into small balls or patties. Place on a lined baking sheet.
  5. Optional: Chill for 30 minutes to firm up.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Fry appetizers in batches 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve warm with dipping sauce and garnish with green onions if desired.

Notes

  • Cheese Variations: Pepper jack or mozzarella can be used.
  • Spice It Up: Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce for heat.
  • Add Vegetables: Diced bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach can be added (cook them first).
  • Baking Option: Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes.
  • Air Fryer Option: Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
